Katie Melua, Lissie, Ellie Goulding, Laura Marling, Kate Nash, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Janelle Monae, Robyn, Sia -- you all are different artists with a Different Sound. Different Sounds from one another, even. I understand this.
But you gotta know that the dumbest one in the whole damn lot -- MARINA SHE OF THE DIAMONDS -- has out-quirked every quirk, out-sneered every sneer, out-sung every sing.
Her only competition is Ke$ha, really. There's something a little disappointing about that! Ke$ha isn't even the whole POINT of Ke$ha!
Anyway, I've given up on the lot of you. YOU ALL GET A 6.5 OK LET'S CALL IT A 7 HAPPY GREAT NOW NEVER SPEAK TO ME AGAIN. (Marina, come up and get yr consolation prize -- a spot on a year-end list! Somewhat but not really related -- so is Nicki Minaj going to release an album at some point, or is she just going to keep appearing on magazine covers until something else happens?
Hey, looking that up on Wikipedia right quick to see that Pink Friday [no, no, no: PINK BULLDOZER!] comes out at the end of November(?), I learned for the first time (omg) that Nicki Minaj's real name (wait for it) is ONIKA MARAJ. THAT'S A NAME THAT EXISTS, ON A BIRTH CERTIFICATE, AND WAS NEVER USED FOR A POP CAREER. WTF, Cookie.
Laura Marling doesn't deserve to be lumped in with this mob!

The tendency I'm describing here is basically "hanging the album on the personality at the center," something you'd think would apply to a lot more performers than it actually does. Should have been more careful with "quirky" in the title, but I think Marling is operating on the same wavelength as Goulding and Melua and Lissie, give or take some levity. What's happening with all of these artists is, whether it's me or them, they're all congealing together in a "I like this bloc" that I can't seem to differentiate. And it might JUST be my problem, but then why are these other ones popping out so readily? With Marina, I think the unexpected key in her name is "AND THE DIAMONDS." I'm clearly listening for the Diamonds, Marina's voice being an integral component but her Voice -- what she has to say -- being secondary to the overall impression. Goldfrapp's album is working similarly for me.
